The selected area is cleared of vegetation and debris, followed by controlled excavation to the approved dimensions. Excavated materials are stockpiled for reuse during backfilling and site restoration. The pit base and side slopes are shaped and compacted to ensure stability and prevent collapse.
Lining and Containment System
For waste pits, an impermeable lining system—such as compacted clay or synthetic geomembrane—is installed to prevent seepage and protect soil and groundwater. The liner is properly anchored and tested for integrity. Coral pits, intended for inert materials such as coral stones and construction debris, are constructed with compacted bases and stable side slopes, with drainage provisions to prevent water accumulation.
Drainage, Access, and Safety Measures
Proper drainage channels are constructed around the pits to divert surface runoff. Access ramps are provided for safe movement of equipment, and perimeter berms or fencing are installed for safety and security. Clear signage is erected to identify the pits and restrict unauthorized access.
Operation, Monitoring, and Closure Preparation
During use, the pits are regularly inspected to ensure structural integrity and environmental compliance. Upon completion of operations, waste pits and coral pits are decommissioned through controlled backfilling, compaction, and site rehabilitation, restoring the area to an environmentally acceptable condition.
