Professor Anthony O. Ibe is a distinguished academic, administrator, and mentor whose career spans over four decades of excellence in engineering education, research, and university administration.
Professor Ibe obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) degree with First Class Honours from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in 1979. He proceeded to Imperial College London, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) in 1984, marking him as one of the earliest Nigerians trained at the highest level in his field.
He is a Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (MNSE – 03358) and a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN – 3497).
Professor Anthony Ibe joined the University of Port Harcourt in October 1985. In 1990, he was appointed Head of Department, at a time when the department was newly established and he was the only PhD holder.
Recognizing the need for academic sustainability and growth, he initiated and developed a postgraduate programme, which became the foundation for producing the majority of the department’s academic staff. Through this visionary initiative, he nurtured and mentored young scholars who later became lecturers, senior academics, and professors.
Professor Ibe served an exceptional fourteen (14) years as Head of Department, during which he implemented a well-structured mentorship and academic development framework. Under his leadership, the department experienced rapid growth in capacity, reputation, and academic output. By the time of his retirement in September 2021, the department had grown to 22 PhD holders, including three full Professors, a testament to his enduring legacy as a builder of institutions and people.

In recognition of his outstanding dedication, leadership, and lifelong service, Professor Anthony Ibe was honored with the Excellence in Service Award during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the University of Port Harcourt in February 2025. This prestigious award reflects his profound impact on the University’s growth, academic excellence, and institutional development.
